Why do overweight people drink Diet Coke at fast food restaurants?

Ok, I can sense some of you are gonna be offended by this but this has been my observation- It seems like a lot of overweight people will order a Diet Coke with their burger and fries at McDonald’s or other fast food places. Have any of you noticed this too? If you were actually serious about reducing your fat and caloric intake, I don’t think it’d be such a good idea to be eating a Big Mac and fries. That kinda kills the "diet" in diet coke.
Ok, i’m a nutrition student and I kinda understand that it’s all about moderation (meaning it’s ok to eat mcdonald’s every once in a while) and that maybe someone wants to save a few calories but usually overweight people eat fast food too often, so it kinda doesn’t make sense.
Type 2 diabetics are supposed to eat healthy in attempt to lose weight and manage their diabetes.
To leafsfan- we learn in nutrition that healthy food doesn’t always cost a lot. You just have to know your options. For example, you can have beans instead of meat for your protein and it’s much cheaper. Buy things on sale, use coupons, etc. If you’re good with using coupons and looking out for sales, sometimes things can come out free when you double coupons.

Why cant resturants offer more caffeine free diet drinks?

More and More people these days are diabetics or cant have caffeine. Our only choice is water.

Why is the only diet soda offered at most restaurants a diet cola?

It seems that with people trying to be weight conscious (not to mention diabetics) that there would be a greater choice of diet sodas at many restaurants, but my experience is rather the opposite. Even if colas are the most popular form of soda, I would think that there would be enough people who would drink a diet lemon/lime or diet orange soda to make it worth having on hand, but then maybe I’m wrong. In my case, generally the restaurant simply loses out because I drink water instead of ordering a soda. (I hate colas!)
